Day wise Itinerary

• Day 1 : Arrival at Paro - Thimphu Drive

  Your flight into Paro across the Himalayan ranges affords spectacular sights of the sacred mountain including Jhomolhari and Jichudrakey ranges. Many of you must be familiar with flying over mountains, but this approach is a little unusual where you will see hills and trees and buildings quite close to the wing tips making a tight turn over the terraced paddy fields along the Paro River. And if you are flying from Kathmandu and Delhi sector, you can be able to witness the breathtaking views of the Mount Everest and Mount Kanchenjanga as well.
  Upon your arrival at Paro International Airport, you will be greeted by representatives from Himalayan Voyages Travel who will be waiting you at exit door. After a short introduction and loading your luggage the first excursion will be a drive through the enchanting valley of Paro, crossing through Bhutanese traditional houses and a willow-fringed river. Take a short stop at Tachogang temple which is located at Isuna valley which is built by an iron bridge builder. Check into hotel.
  Later visit to Memorial Stupa which is built in memory of our late King, visit to gigantic Buddha Stupa, Changangkha monastery overlooking Thimphu valley, Takin mini zoo, the national animal of Bhutan, Painting School where young children undergo 3 years training in 13 different kinds of arts and crafts and visit to Jungshi Handmade paper factory. In the evening stroll around Thimphu downtown.

• Day 2 : Thimphu - Punakha Drive

  After morning breakfast you will be driven to Punakha valley, the old capital of Bhutan which takes about 3 hours drive, crossing Dochu La Pass (3116m/10,200 ft) which separates the Thimphu valley from Punakha. On a clear day, Dochu La offers a stunning view of the snow capped Himalayan ranges including the summits of Masangang and Jejekangphugang, both standing at 7158m(23,480 ft) and Gangkar Punsum(25,000 ft) One can notice traffic over the pass moves clockwise around a chorten(Stupa) and passes under colourful prayer flags stretched across the highway, before beginning the long descent into Punakha valley which nestles in a river valley at an elevation of about 1,700 m(5,500 ft) The road passes through a variety of ecosystem with the fir trees of Dochu La giving way to temperature pine and oak forests and then to sub-tropical vegetation of giant ferns, orchids and banana plantations. Some of the most attractive villages in Bhutan lie on the way to Lobesa where the road bifurcates towards Punakha valley. Check into hotel.
  Later you will take a short hike to Chimi Lhakhang(monastery) through rice fields and visit to Punakha Dzong which was built in 1637 by the Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel adjacent to a temple which had been established as far back as 1328 by the saint Ngagi Rinchen. The Punakha Dzong drives a great wedge between Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu. Flocks of brahmany ducks and long-necked Cormorants skim over the waters in a tight formation. The Zhabdrung himself established the tradition by making Punakha his winter capital and even now, the monk body migrates to Punakha to escape the harsher weather of Thimphu. You will spend the evening at leisure.

• Day 3 : Punakha - Gangtey Valley (Phobjikha)

  Today morning after breakfast set to Gangtey valley which is about 3 hours drive, following the valley of the Dangmi Chhu River, engaging a four-wheeled drive, the hardy off-roader bumps and slides its way through oak and rhododendron forests to Phobjikha. These are the winter nesting grounds of the rare and endangered Black-Necked Cranes (Grus nigricollis) Phobjikha valley is a cluster of a traditional houses. This area is the habitat of different species of birds and wild life, and herds of wild yak graze on their favorite diet of high- altitude dwarf bamboo.
  Later visit to Gangtey Gompa which is set on a hill overlooking the Phobjikha valley. The monastery was built in 1613 by Pema Trinley, grandson of the Nyingmapa saint, Pema Lingpa. Spend the evening at leisure.

• Day 4 : Gangtey - Trongsa

  After breakfast we will drive to Trongsa valley, crossing the black mountain at Pele La Pass and Rukubji where the houses are built at the lower edge of a cultivated tableland. The plateau sloping down between the two mountains is considered to be a serpent, and the location of the temple on its head signifies the subjugation of its harmful aspects by the good spirit of Buddhism. En route to Chendebji chorten(stupa),it鈥檚 stylised eyes peering out over a row of Mani stones built in the mid-eighteenth century by Sida to pin down a demoness who threatened the valleys, the chorten is modeled on the lines of the Nepalese stupas of Boudhnath and Swayambhunath. Check into hotel.
  Later visit to Trongsa Dzong at an elevation of 2,200 m (7,200 ft) has a commanding view of Mangde valley. Trongsa lies at the junction of east and west as well as the far south. The southern route leads to Zhemgang, an area wrapped in tropical forests. And followed by visit to Ta Dzong(watch tower). Evening at leisure.

• Day 5 : Trongsa - Thimphu Drive

  In the morning after having breakfast we will depart to Thimphu following the same route. On the way we will stop for some photographic session. Check into hotel. Later you will enjoy your evening at leisure.

• Day 6 : Thimphu - Paro Drive (Attend Paro Festival)

  After morning breakfast, drive to Paro to attend the Paro festival. Upon arrival you will be taken to the festival ground. Today you will experience the colourful dances in various forms where one can be able to enjoy the Paro Tshechu (festival). It is the most divine and deeply symbolic of all the Buddhist festivals celebrated in Paro. All will be dressed in traditional finery, devotees flock to the Paro Dzong to proclaim their faith and receive blessings through festival. Paro valley monks and layman, dressed in their popular silk costumes come to perform festive dances of good triumphing over evil to the haunting sounds of trumpets, cymbals and flutes. Every dance and costume has survived unchanged for decades. Varieties of dances will be performed during the festival which includes: Lords of the Cremation Grounds, Terrifying Deities, Heroes, Noble Man and Ladies Lencham, Stag and Hounds. The dances are interspersed with folk songs and jesting aided by copious amounts of butter tea and a locally produced potent alcoholic barley spirit.

• Day 7 : Attend Paro Festival

  Today after breakfast you will be again transferred to the festival ground to attend the Paro Festival. This day you will enjoy the enchanting performance done by the monks about the various aspects of the festival.

• Day 8 : Paro (Hike to Tiger Nest)

  After breakfast you will be driven to Taktsang base from where you will hike up to the Taktsang Monastery which is also known as the Tiger鈥檚 Nest. The climb up to the viewpoint will take about 2 hours and from there you will enjoy a spectacular view of the monastery clinging over the side of the cliff. We will stop for light refreshment at the View Point Cafeteria, then walk further up to the monastery which will take about an hour. It is believed that in the 8th century Guru Rinpoche flew on the back of a tigress from Eastern Bhutan to this place and meditated in a cave for 3 months. Later Taktsang was damaged severely by fire in 1998 but has now been fully restored to its original form. After visiting the monastery, we will walk back up to the road, on the way we will stop for lunch at the view point cafeteria and then walk further down to the road. We will then drive back to the hotel. Today you will spent the evening at leisure.

• Day 9 : Paro Sightseeing

  After morning breakfast we will visit to Kichu Monastery which is one of the oldest monasteries surviving in Bhutan, visit to Ta Dzong (watch tower) and later visit to Paro Rinpung Dzong. The Dzong is accessed by a cantilever bridge and in return we will stop for lunch. After lunch we will visit to witness a game of archery, the traditional game of Bhutan. Afterwards visit to the weekend market followed by a visit to a nearby farmhouse where one can experience the typical way of Bhutanese living style. Dinner will be served at the same farm house.
  Overnight stay at hotel.
• Day 10 : Departure / Exit

  In the final day you will be transferred to the airport for your onward journey. Our guide and driver will assist you with your luggages. They will bid you a hearty safe journey back home. Your Bhutan Cultural Tour ends here!
